Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent rebuilt the western and eastern walls of the mosque and built the northeastern minaret known as al-Suleymaniyya. Two additional minarets were erected to the northeast and northwest of the mosque. His name was also inscribed on the walls of the mosque.
